How to upgrade DotNetNuke - Tutorial

In this blog will discuss How to upgrade DotNetNuke from one version to latest version. Many of us are facing issues in upgrading process and there were situations people lost their files while up gradation.In this blog i will demonstrate up gradation process on local system which will be applicable to production server as well.

How to upgrade DotNetNuke - Tutorial

So What are the precautions to be taken while upgrading DotNetNuke.

Note: Please take backup of all the present DNN files on production server or local server.

Step 1: Visit DotNetNuke website ->Community -> Download. You will be landed to following website where you can download Install package,Source code,Upgrade package.

Since we are upgrading the DNN top latest version we just need upgrade package.

Download the UPGRADE PACKAGE.

You will be redirected to dotnetnuke.codeplex.com where your upgrade package will be downloaded automatically.

Wait for download to complete.

Once the download is completed  click on show in folder option for the folder to show on your system.

Step 2: Folder will be shown in your Downloads folder in a zipped format. Extract the zipped files into separate folder

Step 3: After extraction open the extracted folder and copy all files.

Step 4: Once copied navigate to your existing DotNetNuke set where you currently running DNN.

Usually in C:/Users/username/Document/WebsiteName/

Step 5: Paste the copied files into existing DNN. Windows will alerts you saying There is already file with same name in this location. You have to choose Copy and Replace option. Which replaces old files with latest DNN files.

Once all files have been replaced  run Microsoft Webmatrix.

Access the URL provided to access the DNN.

Step 6: This time you wont be directly redirected to DNN default website as it did in first installation rather it would redirected to DNN up-gradation wizard. Where you need to provide Account Info you provided while installation and logging in to the site.

In my case Username was admin and Password was password.Enter the credentials and click on Upgrade Now.   

Step 7: If credentials are proper DNN will starts it up gradation process. It by default upgrades database and extensions.

Step 8: After the up-gradation is completed DNN provides allows you to visit website on clicking Visit  Website Button and it will redirected to default Website.

During whole process DNN gives you which version you are currently using and which versionwyou will be upgraded. In my case you can see I am upgrading DNN from 7.01.01 to 7.01.02.
